Caryn is a lesbian who had been the victim of an abusive relationship for many years. She suffered severe physical and mental abuse at the hands of her partner, culminating in a violent out-of-state incident where her partner was arrested, convicted of Domestic Violence Assault, and sentenced to 7 days in jail. Upon returning to New York City, the partner filed for an order of protection against Caryn, a common tactic used by abusers to further harass their ex-partners.

Caryn was referred to NYLAG for its unique expertise in handling complex cases for members of the LGBTQ community. NYLAG represented Caryn in both her defense of the family offense petition and in her petition to obtain an order of protection against her ex-partner.
