Mariam

We enable immigrants to achieve their dreams of citizenship. NYLAG helped Mariam escape years of abuse and begin a safe and liberated life in the United States.

Mariam grew up in Mali in an extremely traditional, religious family where female genital mutilation was widely practiced. Mariam was subjected to this inhumane procedure as an infant. As she grew older, she was subjected to further abuse after she refused to enter into an arranged marriage with her cousin. Mariam left Mali for the United States to escape this severe familial abuse. Attorneys from NYLAG’s Immigrant Protection Unit enabled her to successfully apply for and receive asylum and obtain Employment Authorization. Now she is able to live and work lawfully and safely in the United States.
