How do you become an American citizen? Newcomers to the U.S. face a variety of hurdles, such as learning a new language or establishing a new home. Some immigrants face the additional challenges of poverty, persecution and immigration red tape. The Immigrant Protection Unit (IPU) understands and empathizes with immigrants trying to achieve their dream of citizenship Immigrants often confront legal obstacles due to disability, age, or recent changes in law. NYLAG’s IPU assists immigrants in these situations in applying for citizenship or legal residency status and in applying for and retaining appropriate government benefits.
In addition, our attorneys visit immigrant community centers and answer questions on public benefits issues including SSI, food stamps, Medicaid, and welfare. We also offer training to social service professionals, advocates and immigrants, provide commentary on radio and television shows and author bylined articles in non-English language newspapers across the United States.
