It’s Key to the City Season

The New York City Council’s Key to the City Initiative, coordinated by the New York Immigration Coalition in collaboration with NYLAG, the consulates of Latin America and the Caribbean, and other partners, will launch its sixth season on Saturday, September 24 in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

KTTC events offer New York City immigrants the opportunity to apply for consular identification cards and passports, and to access a full range of social, educational, health, and financial workshops and services ‒ including legal services provided by NYLAG ‒ right in their own neighborhoods.

KTTC’s community-based services model has been enormously successful in reaching immigrant populations who are often isolated and face a shortage of local, accessible support services. Since its inception in 2011, KTTC has served over 28,000 New Yorkers from over 60 countries.

Key to the City and NYLAG staffNYLAG began its partnership with KTTC in 2014, and to date has provided nearly 1,400 immigrants with legal assistance at KTTC events. Every individual receives a comprehensive screening, including application assistance and legal representation when possible. Last year, over 30 percent of the immigrants screened were found to be eligible for some form of status relief. The clinics are staffed with a combination of legal professionals from NYLAG’s Immigrant Protection Unit and pro bono attorneys and volunteers, allowing NYLAG to provide services to more immigrants, and to do so in the most efficient way.

“By bringing a broad range of vital services directly to immigrant communities across the City, the Key to the City initiative provides an invaluable lifeline to immigrants, who are often unaware of their rights, or afraid to seek assistance. We are so grateful to Speaker Mark-Viverito and Council Member Menchaca for not only continuing to support KTTC, but actually doubling the number of events being held in the new season,” said Beth Goldman, President and Attorney-in-Charge of the New York Legal Assistance Group. “We look forward to partnering with our friends at the New York Immigration Coalition and the many other KTTC partners to provide comprehensive legal screenings to immigrants in a safe and welcoming setting.”

“The New York Immigration Coalition is excited to continue our strong and successful partnership with the New York Legal Assistance Group this fiscal year at Key to the City events across New York City,” said Betsy Plum, Director of Special Projects at the NYIC. “The NYIC has run Key to the City events through the generous support of the New York City Council since 2011, but the events gained a whole new power and meaning for immigrant communities with NYLAG’s arrival to the initiative in 2014. When the thousands of immigrant New Yorkers we serve every year can receive a comprehensive screening in their individual immigration case, they are empowered and able to live more informed and reassured lives in our city. Our immense thanks to NYLAG, and to Speaker Mark-Viverito, Chair of the Immigration Committee Carlos Menchaca, and the City Council as a whole for making these events and this opportunity for collaboration a reality.”

KTTC events will be held in a different New York City community every month from September through June 2017. For details about the Sunset Park event, click here. (We will provide updated information about subsequent events as it becomes available.)
