NYLAG strongly condemns President Trump’s tweets announcing that the US military will no longer “accept or allow” transgender individuals to serve. We stand with our clients, many of whom are transgender and have been service members, in opposing this discriminatory and devastating pronouncement. Trans people are disproportionately likely to enlist and serve – in fact, estimates indicate that roughly 20% of transgender people in the US have served or are currently serving in the military. For many, service provides a source of financial stability in a world where trans people too often face discrimination and disenfranchisement in the workforce. Though tweets do not constitute a real policy, any effort to either bar future service by trans people or to dismiss currently enlisted trans service-members would pose an unacceptable threat to the livelihoods of thousands of people who have chosen to risk their lives for this country. NYLAG will continue to fight on behalf of our clients for the benefits and recognition that they deserve, and fight against policies that undermine their livelihoods and self-determination.
