Cancer Advocacy

Since 2002, NYLAG LegalHealth has provided free legal services to low-income and medically under-served people living with cancer in the five boroughs of New York City.

LegalHealth assists over 600 cancer patients annually in a range of legal services:

  • Insurance
  • Advance planning (wills, health care proxies, powers of attorney, permanency planning)
  • Housing
  • Immigration
  • Government benefits
  • Employment related matters

LegalHealth holds legal clinics on site at hospital cancer centers and accepts referrals from community based organizations and patient navigation programs. It also conducts home and hospice visits if needed and trains cancer specialists on the legal issues affecting their patients.

In 2008, LegalHealth established the National Cancer Legal Services Network to support the provision of legal services for people with cancer throughout the country.  In 2012, the NCLSN launched www.nclsn.org to provide the country’s first comprehensive database of legal service providers that can assist with issues related to cancer.  The site also includes training and resources for those attempting to start new cancer legal advocacy programs.
