New Law Protects Tenants Impacted by COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic caused thousands of people in New York City to lose their jobs. As rents became due, many tenants —including families with children—were rightly terrified about how they would pay their rent and keep their homes.

NYLAG has been on the front lines advocating for relief for renters with the State, the City, and the court system.  We applaud Governor Andrew M. Cuomo for signing a new law that permanently prevents unpaid rent that accrued during the COVID-19 emergency from being the basis for an eviction of any tenant who experienced hardship during the emergency.  We are grateful to New York State Senator Brad Hoylman and Assembly Member Dinowitz for their leadership on this issue.

NYLAG helped to lead advocacy efforts on this bill because we knew our clients’ lives depended on it. Our clients are bearing a heavy burden in this pandemic. No one should face homelessness as a result of the pandemic.
