Pro Se Plus Project

Empowering Migrants and Mobilizing Communities

About PSPP

The Pro Se Plus Project (PSPP) is a collaboration of several immigration legal services providers and community based organizations aiming to address some of the legal needs of newly arrived immigrants to New York City.

The recent increase in newly arrived immigrants has exposed what legal services providers have known for years: that there are simply not enough immigration legal providers to meet the need for representation and even for legal information. While full representation remains essential, pro se assistance that is robust and delivered by lawyers and non-lawyers who have meaningful training and supervision can fill some of the gaps in services.

PSPP provides thorough legal orientations, robust screenings, triage, and community access to pro se assistance with applications for asylum, employment authorization, immigration court motions, and other immigration-related relief for unrepresented immigrants. To provide these services, PSPP staff trains and leverages volunteers and interns.

Why PSPP was created:

PSPP was founded to address this stark reality with a community based model centered on advising asylum seekers on their legal rights, assisting them in preparing and filing asylum applications in court, and empowering them to represent themselves in immigration hearings. This type of innovative, responsive approach is what our city needs to immediately meet immigrants’ urgent needs.

NYLAG’s PSPP program offers assistance with:

  • Immigration screenings and advice and counsel;
  • Pro se asylum application assistance;
  • Pro se change of address and motion to change venue;
  • Pro se applications for employment authorization; and
  • Know Your Rights and legal orientations.
