Abby Biberman
Associate Director, Public Benefits Unit
Abby Biberman is the associate director of the Public Benefits Unit (PBU). Abby is an advocate for systemic changes that lower barriers to accessing these critical benefits for people experiencing poverty. Her work involves supervision of individual cases, impact litigation, involvement in taskforces and working groups, and advocacy for legislative and regulatory changes. Abby also leads trainings and participates in panels on representation at administrative fair hearings to protect and access public benefits, and other topics in public benefits law.
Abby joined NYLAG in 2011, as a legal fellow working on immigrant access to public benefits. During her tenure at NYLAG, she has been a member of several practice groups, including elder law, public health insurance law, and eviction defense in the Tenants’ Rights Unit. Prior to becoming associate director of PBU, she supervised the Public Assistance, SNAP, and Shelter Advocacy Practice. From 2016 to 2019, Abby taught the Economic Justice Clinic at Brooklyn Law School.
