New York Legal Assistance Group Appoints Anna Luft as Associate Director for Housing Policy and Advocacy

The newly created role will expand the scope of Luft’s policy advocacy and community work to include private housing and intersecting issue areas

NEW YORK — The New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) appointed Anna Luft, Director of NYLAG’s Public Housing Justice Project, to the newly created role of Associate Director for Housing Policy and Advocacy last week. In this new role, Luft, a seasoned housing attorney and tenants’ rights advocate, will build upon her work on public housing tenants’ rights in order to address the intersection of housing policy and immigration, employment, domestic violence, public benefits, and elder law.

“Anna steps into this new role with the track record and experience necessary to meet a moment in which safe, stable and affordable housing remains out of reach for far too many New Yorkers,” said NYLAG President and CEO Lisa Rivera. “Her unwavering commitment to advancing tenants’ rights guides her work and will be instrumental to NYLAG as she collaborates and promotes housing policies that meet the needs of the communities we serve.”

As Director of NYLAG’s Public Housing Justice Project (PHJP), Luft created and led the first team of legal advocates in New York City solely devoted to advancing the rights of public housing tenants by providing eviction defense, affirmative litigation, policy advocacy and community clinics.

“I am thrilled to serve as Associate Director for Housing Policy and Advocacy at NYLAG, where I get to build upon the work that I have done over the last four and a half years,” said Luft. “Housing policy informs our work well beyond our Tenants’ Rights Unit, and I am excited to get to support the needs and priorities of our clients. I thank NYLAG for recognizing the need for this role and look forward to amplifying the voices of our communities through both litigation and policy.”

Prior to her work at NYLAG, Luft was a staff attorney on the Collateral Consequences Team at Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem, where she represented systems-impacted clients in a wide range of related civil matters.
