PIX11: Find NYCHA violations and investigations online with new tool

A recent settlement won by NYLAG attorneys ensures that NYCHA tenants will now be able to view code violations in their properties:

The website for the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) now includes information about violations issued to NYCHA properties as requested by Housing Court.

It marks a change to the HPD’s website, which previously only offered information on privately owned apartment buildings and homes in New York City.

“This is a major victory for NYCHA residents in the fight for housing justice,” said Danielle Tarantolo, Director of NYLAG’s Special Litigation Unit,” said Danielle Tarantolo, the director of New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG)’s Special Litigation Unit.

“This transparency will empower NYCHA residents to better understand their apartment conditions and advocate for themselves and their communities.”

The change also comes after 2024 lawsuit by NYLAG attorneys on behalf of three NYCHA residents who called for increased transparency and accountability from HPD. In June, the court approved a settlement that required HPD to publish housing code violations issued in NYCHA buildings.
