How to Download, Share, or Sort Data

Beneath each visualization is a Tableau logo with several icons to the right, including:

  • SHARE icon allows you to share a particular view with all selections you made by e-mail, twitter, or FaceBook.
  • DOWNLOAD icon allows you to select your file format to download the data based on the selections you made for the visualization. If you chose Statewide 2018 data, for example, that is what will be downloaded.
    • Image (.png)
    • Data – a chart pops up with the data, with an option to download using CSV
    • Crosstab – another way to download data, using your choice of Excel or CSV
    • PDF
    • PowerPoint
    • Tableau Workbook
  • Full Screen View
  • To Sort the order in which the plans appear in the visualization, in some of the graphs you can hover your mouse over the horizontal axis at the bottom and this icon will appear.  You may need to click on the axis first – the axis will change color and this icon  appears with up and down arrows.   Click on the icon to re-order the plans from high to low or alphabetically.
  • When you hover your mouse over the horizontal axis, if you click on this icon, a table appears with the data in the visualization based on the selections you made. You can download it as described above.

About the Home Care Member Years by Hourly Category Table

Data source: MMCOR Exhibits A5 (Personal Care Hours year to date) and A7 (CDPAP Hours Year to Date).

Note Exhibit A6 (PCS and Home Health Hours year to date) is not included, but the expenditures and number of members receiving Home Health care and the cost are in the Long Term Care Services and Service Expenditures tables. Also, according to the MMCOR instructions, the Personal Care hours shown in this table should include hours of Home Health Aide if they provided no health-related services.[1] See glossary.

The plans report the number of member months in which they provided three different types of home care in seven different ranges of hours, from one to 79 hours per month to over 700 hours per month. The hours are not grouped in a way that may seem logical, as they describe the hours per month, and most care plans are described in hours per week. Using 4.3 weeks in an average month, here are examples of care plans for each grouping:

[1] DOH MMCOR instructions can be downloaded here. The definition has remained the same since at least 2010, comparing 2021 instructions.

The data can be visualized in three ways, using the three tabs at the top of the page:

  1. Home Care Hours Categories line graph results in a bell curve for each plan.
  2. Distributions by Categories – bar graph with the same data.
  3. Change Y-to-Y [Year-to Year] Home Care Hours: Year to year change from 2017 to 2018 in the number or percentage of enrollees receiving home care in each of the seven groupings of hours.

For all three visualizations, you may select:

  • Home Care Type (either Personal Care or CDPAP (“CD”), or “all” to combine both)
  • Region
  • Year (2017 or 2018)
  • Individual plan(s), or if you are showing all plans, you can click on one plan’s line to highlight it

Use the slider labeled Total Member Year (MY) with Home Care (see glossary for definition of MY) to view only plans with larger or smaller enrollments in order to compare comparable size plans. You may select individual plans for comparison.

Show Number or Percentage selector–you may opt to show numbers of Member Years receiving each level of hours or the percentage of the plan’s member years authorized for each of the seven groupings of hours from high to low. Clicking on any of the plan’s graph lines highlights that plan’s distributions or bell curve.

Example: Selecting NE Region reveals 11 plans. The percentage of members receiving the lowest amount of hours – 1-79 hours/month – ranged from 41.4% for UnitedHealthcare to 74.2 % for VNA Homecare Options/Nascentia. VNA/Nascentia had the second lowest percentage of members receiving the highest amount of hours –700+/month – at 0.55% of members and United Healthcare was highest with 6.69% of enrollment. (You can click on a plan in the list below the graph to highlight a plan’s line to make it more visible).

The data can be downloaded for more analysis. See download instructions on this webpage just below the visualization. An Excel worksheet in which combined 2018 PCS and CDPAP data has been downloaded for each region can be downloaded here.
