What is Giving Tuesday Now?
Giving Tuesday Now is a new day of virtual global generosity that will take place on May 5, 2020. It’s an emergency response to the overwhelming and unprecedented need caused by the threat of COVID-19 (coronavirus). Our free civil legal services are needed now more than ever to enforce workplace rights, help secure and maintain unemployment and other public benefits, battle housing issues, protect victims of intimate partner violence, and so much more. Help us ensure they have access to justice regardless of their income.
The COVID-19 pandemic has threaten our public health and economy. NYLAG has responded.
Since the pandemic, we:
- Created a free NY COVID-19 Legal Resource Hotline
- NYLAG Sets-Up a Dedicated Hotline for Our Hospital and Medical Facilities that have legal issues
- We helped draft and pushed for two executive orders signed by Governor Cuomo for healthcare proxies and the standby guardianship law
- Advocated for the release of immigrants in ICE detention centers living in inhumane conditions
- Stalled evictions
- Ensured the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) extended financial benefits, and claims help amid VA’s COVID-19 response including “suspending all actions on Veteran debts.”
- Succeeded in moving vulnerable adults in the adult shelter system—who are not yet ill—to isolation beds as a proactive life-saving measure.
