NYLAG's Public Housing Justice Project

Public housing makes up 7% of the rental stock in New York City, and 1 in 17 of New Yorkers live in NYCHA housing. NYCHA residents make up a diverse and longstanding community and face unique legal challenges created by New York City’s largest landlord and the historic divestment and mismanagement of public housing on the local, state, and federal level.

NYLAG’s Public Housing Justice Project was the first team of legal advocates in New York City dedicated to addressing the unique legal challenges of NYCHA tenants.

Through eviction defense, administrative advocacy and representation, affirmative litigation, and policy advocacy, we aim to provide as comprehensive representation as possible to our clients.

PHJP’s programming includes:

  • Right to Counsel eviction defense
  • Succession advocacy
  • Community clinics
  • NYCHA HP Pro Bono Project
