(NEW YORK, NY) June 12, 2018: Yesterday Attorney General Jeff Session’s decision in the Matter of A-B- eroded the protections that the US provides for survivors of domestic violence whose abusers are able to act with impunity in their home countries. The New York Legal Assistance Group’s (NYLAG) has issued the following statement:

“The decision contradicts longstanding principles of asylum law and our country’s commitment to protect those fleeing persecution on protected grounds in their home country. This is a tragedy for thousands of survivors of domestic violence who have sought sanctuary in the US from a lifetime of abuse.”

“NYLAG will continue to fight for all asylum seekers and all immigrants, including those potentially affected by today’s decision. We urge immigrants to continue to seek out legal advice and assistance.”
